First Fridays: Labor Day "Carnival" Edition

Labor Day Carnival Edition

by

Back by popular demand, the Schomburg Center is proud to present our fourth annual First Fridays: Labor Day  “Carnival” Edition, Celebrating 70+ years of Caribbean Culture and History with the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).

A crowd favorite and authentic celebration of the people of African descent in the Caribbean, First Fridays: Labor Day “Carnival” Edition returns with steel pan drummers, moko jumbie, mass camp, and a curated selection of vendors ready to celebrate the culture and special traditions of the West Indies.  Liz The Intl Diva, our host for the night, along with DJ Hard Hittin Harry and DJ JP, and live performers will be there to bring down the house in this community celebration of Carnival. Come dressed and ready with flags to proudly represent your country!

First Fridays guests are invited to check out our pop-up display, “Caribbean History,” featuring items from the Schomburg Center collections, sign up for a Schomburg Society membership, and visit the Schomburg Shop—while networking and dancing the night away! With our extended hours, guests are also invited to check out our exhibitions A Ballad For Harlem and  Femmetography: The Gaze Shifted.

We’ll also be celebrating the Birthday of the Schomburg’s Special Events Manger Aisha Diori, aka Glitteratie Ent!

Donations are welcome and go towards presenting Schomburg Center programming and preserving our collections.

Dress Code: The best representing your country and West Indian culture!

Come party and experience African fashion with a pop shop by Ghana made designer Simply Maam.
